The (SARS-CoV-2, known as COVID-19) PCR test detects the presence of the virus’s RNA in a sample taken from the pharynx and nose even before the onset of symptoms. One of the prerequisites for a successful test is the correct sampling and the presence of an adequate virus count in the sample. The test provides an answer as to whether the patient is infected with the virus at the time of the sampling.

How to prepare for the test?
In order to ensure the accuracy of the sampling’s result, the patient must not eat, drink, brush teeth, smoke or perform any activity that may affect the density and composition of mucous secretions during the 8-10 hours before sampling. E.g. you should not use mouthwash, consume candy or chew gum. Patients should only drink clean water even if they are very thirsty. However, if possible, this should be avoided 6 hours before the test.
How is the test carried out?
The test is performed via an oral sample taken from the posterior pharynx and a sample taken from the nose.
How long does it take to get the results?
The results of the tests are available within 48 hours at the earliest. The results of the test are submitted to the National eHealth Infrastructure (EESZT) by the laboratory service provider, which can be accessed via the client gateway.
In addition, you can download the results from our online customer service interface following the validation, no later than 48 hours after sampling.
What happens if the result is positive?
The result can be “negative”, “positive”, or “sample cannot be evaluated”.
If the test result is “sample cannot be evaluated”, further testing is required.
In case the result is “positive”, the patient will be notified by phone and will receive information about the further steps.
