What is Neurology?
Neurology is that part of medicine that deals with the structural and functional disorders of the central and peripheral nervous systems. The most common problems are pain syndromes associated with the head and lower back and other pain syndromes such as dizziness, numbness, weakness, vision problems, unconsciousness as well as memory and mental problems.
It is important to note that damage to the nervous system is often not a singular disorder but a complication resulting from damage to other organ systems.
The principal diseases of the nervous system
- Developmental disorders
- Consequences of injuries to the nervous system
- Inflammatory diseases
- Immunological diseases (multiple sclerosis)
- Disorders of cerebral circulation (stroke)
- Epilepsy or other lapse of consciousness disorders
- Degenerative diseases (with extensive destruction of nerve cells)
- Movement disorders (Parkinson’s disease or other syndromes similar to Parkinson’s)
- Diseases leading to deteriorating intellectual capacity (dementia), especially Alzheimer’s disease
- Pain disorders (primarily headaches - tension and migraine - nerve pain, lower back pain)
- Diseases of the spine and the spinal cord
- Diseases of the surrounding nerve fibers and muscles
Parkinson’s DiseaseParkinson’s disease is one of the most prevalent neuro-degenerative diseases causing movement disorders. The main symptoms are resting tremor, slowed movements, distinctive rigid joints and posture disorders. The disease is the subject of countless erroneous beliefs and contains many pitfalls in its diagnosis and treatment resulting in many patients with trembling hands and uncertain gait being mistakenly treated with anti-Parkinson’s medications. Therefore, when the possibility of Parkinson’s disease exists, it is advisable to consult with a specialist who will know and avert the pitfalls, determine the correct diagnosis and set up a successful therapeutic treatment.
Chronic Pain SyndromeChronic pain syndrome is defined as pain that lasts for more than three months. Modern medicine has categorized it as a separate disease due to the suffering it causes. Its development, progression, complications and therapy differ widely from the average pain. Consultation with a specialist is advised for pain relief and for regaining of the quality of life.
Neuropathic PainDamage to the nervous system often manifests itself in the limbs as weakness, numbness, sensory disturbance and pain. It is important to know whether the disease is of the central nervous system (the brain, spinal cord) or the peripheral nervous system (nerve roots, plexus, fibers) since peripheral nerve damage (trauma, diabetes, carpal tunnel syndrome, etc.), requires an entirely different treatment. A neurologist specializing neuropathy should definitely be consulted for diagnosis and treatment.
HeadachesHeadaches are one of the most common health problems for which patients turn to a doctor or neurologist for help. Countless dangerous or harmless, organic or psychological factors may cause headaches and it is important to separate the two. This may easily be done with the help of a specialist. A neurologist should be consulted for the diagnostic steps to be taken and the therapy.
