Panoramic Dental X-Ray

Purpose

A panoramic radiograph (orthopantomography) is a special x-ray based on layers that looks at the teeth and jaw at the same time.  The examination may be conventional, on x-ray film, or digital.  The x-ray allows the dentist to obtain quick insight into the condition of the teeth and the surrounding bones.  It is usually used in dental screening, treatments and when looking for a focus.

Preparation

No preparation is required.

Procedure

You may be asked to remove jewellery, glasses, and any metal objects that may obscure the images such as earrings, tongue rings etc.  The x-ray image is acquired in only a few seconds passing in front of your face from one side of your body to the other. During this time it is important to remain as still as possible whilst the image is being taken to ensure that no blurring occurs.
You will not feel any pain or discomfort whilst undergoing the procedure.

Contraindications

No matter the type of machine, the procedure always uses x-rays.  Thus, it is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women.   Please inform your treating physician if you are either of these.  For safety, the x-ray assistant should also ask this question upon the patient’s arrival.
