Purpose
In the case of men, the examination is principally for examining the exact structure of the prostate and the seminal vesicles. Prior to surgery, it is used to ascertain possible spreading of rectal abnormalities. In young girls (virgins), it is used instead of vaginal ultrasound.
Advance preparation
Bowels should be emptied the morning of the examination. If this can be accomplished spontaneously, then no other preparation is necessary. If not, then a Glycerin suppository should be inserted in the morning. No enema is required.
Procedure
The area of the body to be examined must be accessible.
Contraindications
No absolute contraindications except for inflamed hemorrhoids or a tight anus.
The Patient will be given a written report of the results.
