Pediatric urology deals with diseases of the urinary tract system from birth to 18 years of age. It may happen among boys and girls as well that a disorder affecting the urethra or genital organs occurs after being born. Later on, pediatric urologists are visited most commonly due to urinary tract infections.

What are the characteristic urological problems among children?

There is a wide range of urological conditions. Unfortunately, from benign conditions that affect quality life – such as tight foreskin (phimosis), bedwetting at night – to life-threatening conditions also, e.g. tumours or disorders causing severe dysfunctions, a variety of urological problems appear in this age group. The majority of these diseases can be treated among children on the level of quality life as well, if diagnosed early.

The pediatric urology clinic is available at the Buda Health Center for patients under 18 years of age.

What kind of solutions exist and which therapies, medications can be applied for problems in pediatric urology?

There is a variety of treatment options for these conditions. Drug therapy and surgical procedures can also be considered among children, however, life style recommendations to parents and children are enough most of the time. Although lead by good intentions, parents are often given advices, either the person giving the advice is a specialist or simply a nice acquaintance. This puts the child and the parent also in a difficult situation. The strategy discussed with the urologist may also be as therapeutic as drug therapy or surgical procedures.

What are the signs of a urinary tract infection?

Besides the presence of local irritation, more frequent urination, pungent smell with or without fever may be signs of urinary tract infection.

From a diagnostic point of view, it is of high significance to assess whether there is an underlying anatomical disorder behind the infection or not. This can be confirmed by physical examination and ultrasound as well, which assessments are pain-free and easy to perform. At times, more complex diagnostic methods may be necessary, but these are generally performed at specialized institutes and planned in advance.

How different should a child be treated at a urologic examination compared to an adult?

Adult and child patients equally deserve to be treated with respect and patience. The difference is that during a pediatric urology consultation the child is accompanied by his or her parents, thus the discussion happens on a variety of communicational levels. The course of the examination depends on the age group of the patient: in case of a small child, who likes to wriggle, it often coincides with nappy changing; in case of a teenager, a mutual conversation with the parents involved is more common.

The beauty and as well as challenge in pediatric urology is that specialists get to know families, generations at the same time. Thus, in addition to giving help in finding solutions for the patients’ actual health problems, doctors can have an influence on their culture of health, they may think together with several generations, and follow the members of the family up for quite a long time.
