What is Psychiatry?
While neurology deals with the organic and physical aspects of the diseases of the nervous system and their treatment, psychiatry (deriving from the Greek psykhe: soul; -iatry: medical treatment; from Gk. iatrikos: medical, iasthai: to heal) is the medical specialty devoted to the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders.
What Happens During a Psychiatric Examination?
The mental status (thinking process, emotional and behavior patterns) is examined and case history taken. Mental disorders are diagnosed in accordance with international criteria listed in diagnostic manuals (i.e., depression, schizophrenia, delusive disorders, etc.).Various methods are used in its treatment including medications and several types of psychotherapy
