The Opticians Association of Hungary has been organizing a „Sight Month” campaign ever since 2005 to encourage regular eye examinations.
Statistics gained from several countries, show that more than 50% of the populations require some type of eye correction and, with the aging population, this rate is only growing.
Hungarian surveys show that although every fourth or fifth person suffers from various degrees of visual disorders, one tenth of the population has never had an eye examination.
During the past decade, the incidence of myopia has been on the increase in Hungary. Though we have not yet reached the statistics of the Asian countries (two-thirds of the school children wear eyeglasses), it is very important to raise everyone’s awareness of this fact.
It is an oft occurrence that, the cause of a child’s learning difficulties or an adult’s headaches, treated with medications for several years, is the need for prescription eyeglasses shown during a regular screening examination of the eyes.
In addition, not only other eye disorders (i.e., glaucoma), that may still be asymptomatic, but also several other disorders such as high blood pressure, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, etc. may be discovered in time during an eye examination.
