Dermoid cyst surgery
A dermoid cyst is a benign cyst like structure, which may contain multiple types of tissues (e.g., hair, tooth, cartilage, etc.) It commonly presents above the sacrum, but it may develop on other places too. A malignant transformation occurs in 1 2%.
What are the causes of a dermoid cyst?
It is more common in men, and it is caused by disturbed hair growth. The secretion of the sebaceous and sweat glands cannot be emitted from the inwardly turned hair follicles.
Symptoms of a dermoid cyst
Usually, it is detected when it causes symptoms due to the inflammation. Pain, skin redness, swelling, and discharge develops. Once the inflammation resolved, temporary or constant discharge through the fistula openings may remain.
Diagnosis of a dermoid cyst
Physical examination.
Treatment of a dermoid cyst
When it is inflamed and causes symptoms, it needs to be treated just like any other abscess: exploration in local anesthesia, cleansing and an open wound treatment is necessary. Its complete precise removal must be performed in a surgical setting, in an inflammation free state. Multiple surgical options are available, and the suitable one should always be selected by evaluating the given situation. All of these result in the elimination of the fistula network, and a closing flap may be necessary due to the developed lack of tissues.
Prevention of a dermoid cyst
Not possible.
