Purpose
Ultrasound of the joints is for examining the soft tissues surrounding the joints, not the bones. The cartilaginous covering of the bones, ligaments, tendons and muscles are delineated well as are tears, effusion or cartilage injury. The advantage here over an MRI is that dynamic examinations are possible, meaning that the joints may be seen in motion.
Advanced Preparation
None required.
Procedure
The examination is performed with the area to be examined exposed.
Contraindications
No contraindications. However, the examination cannot be performed if a cast or fixation device is in place.
You will receive a written report of the results.
